Get to Know….Miranda Lash



1. Where are you from and what is your Hispanic heritage?

I’m a California girl at heart. I was born in San Francisco, but moved to Los Angeles when I was very young. My family also lived a few years in Fresno, CA. My mother was born in Mexico – her family is from Zacatecas, my grandfather was once mayor of the town of Montescobedo. Now her family lives in Los Angeles. My father also has some Hispanic background, being from Albuquerque, NM, but mostly he considers himself “New Mexican.”

2. How long have you been in New Orleans?

Almost five months –it has gone so fast! My husband brought me here many times during our “courtship,” however, so I did have some sense of the city and its charm before I moved here.

3. What is your title at the New Orleans Museum of Art?

Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art

4. When did you fall in love with art?

It was an unexpected process in college. When I was growing up I went to museums occasionally, but never hungered for it. Then the summer of my junior year I was flipping through my course catalog and saw that there was such a major as “art history.” I read the course descriptions and thought - this sounds like all electives! That is the best way to choose a major, I think – go for what feels like “electives” to you. I got a work-study job at the Fogg – Harvard University’s art museum and started doing reports on the conditions of paintings. It was so fascinating to be so close to works of art – learning what they were made of and how to take care of them. I was hooked.

5. Favorite TV show growing up.

It’s a little embarrassing but I loved Mama’s Family. Also The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and The Simpsons.

6. What hobbies do you have?

I recently got into gardening – I find it very enjoyable and relaxing helping things grow (I used to be the girl that could not maintain a house plant).

7. Favorite thing to do to relax.

Playing with my kitten, Clementine, going for walks around the neighborhood and watching Entourage with my husband, Jim.

8. How would you describe New Orleans to someone who has never visited the city?

It is unlike any other place you’ve been. It reminds me more of being in Europe or Latin America than the U.S. Very laid back and friendly, but at the same time very steeped in tradition and history. Beautiful architecture and oak trees and amazing food and music. Really, it changes your idea of what “food” should be. Still in recovery but full of tremendously strong and committed inhabitants.

9. Favorite childhood memory.

Going to the beach and collecting seashells or hanging out in the pool with friends and family, eating barbeque in a swimsuit.

10. What artist would you enjoy meeting the most?

Do they have to be alive? If not, I would say Michelangelo. If yes, I would say Cy Twombly – amazing abstract painter.

I am really looking forward to working at NOMA, getting to know the city, the local artists and especially the Hispanic community. My plan is to make contemporary Latin American art one of my focuses – I am excited to bring new art to this city.

1. ¿De dónde eres y de dónde proviene tu herencia hispana?

Soy una chica californiana de corazón. Nací en San Francisco, pero me mudé a Los Angeles cuando era bien pequeña. Mi familia también vivió varios años en Fresno, CA. Mi madre nació en México –su familia es de Zacatecas; mi abuelo fue el alcalde del pueblo de Montescobedo. Ahora su familia vive en Los Angeles. Mi padre también tiene un poco de herencia hispana, ya que es de Albuquerque, NM, pero se considera un “nuevo mexicano”.

2.¿Cuánto tiempo llevas en Nueva Orleans?

Casi cinco meses –¡y se han ido volando! Sin embargo, mi esposo me había traido muchas veces durante nuestro cortejo, así que ya conocía la ciudad y su encanto antes de mudarme a vivir aquí.

3. ¿Cuál es tu posición en el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo?

4. ¿Cuándo te enamoraste del arte?

Fue un proceso inesperado en la universidad. Creciendo visité algunos museos ocasionalmente, pero no me moría por ellos. Luego, en el verano de mi penúltimo año estaba ojeando el catálogo de cursos y vi que había una especialidad en “historia del arte”. Leí la descripción del curso y pensé –¡suena como si fueran todos electivas! Esa es la mejor manera de seleccionar una especialidad –escoger lo que te parece un curso electivo. Obtuve un trabajo-estudio en Fogg –el museo de arte de la Universidad de Harvard- y commence a hacer reportes sobre las condiciones de las pinturas. Era fascinante estar tan cerca de las obras de arte –aprender de lo que estaban hechas y cuidarlas. Me enamoré.

5. Programa de televisión favorito.

Me da un poco de vergüenza, pero me encantaba “Mama’s Family”. También el Príncipe de BelAir y los Simpsons.

6. ¿Cuáles son tus pasatiempos?

Recientemente he comenzado a interesarme por la jardinería – creo que es muy relajante y entretenido ver algo crecer (siempre he tendido a ser la chica que no logra mantener con vida ni una planta casera).

7. ¿Qué prefieres hacer para relajarte?

Jugar con mi gatita Clementine, caminar por el vecindario y ver “Entourage” con mi esposo Jim.

8.¿Cómo describirías a Nueva Orleans a alguien que nunca haya visitado la ciudad?

Es diferente a cualquier lugar que hayas visitado. Me recuerda más a estar en Europa en Latinoamérica que en los Estados Unidos. Es muy relajado y hospitalario, pero a la misma vez cuenta con una gran tradición e historia. La arquitectura es y los pinos son hermosos y la música y la comida son increíbles. Realmente, cambia tu mentalidad sobre lo que debería considerarse “comida”. Aún en recuperación, pero lleno de habitantes tremendamente fuerte y comprometidos.

9. Recuerdo favorito de tu infancia.

Ir a la playa y recoger caracoles o disfrutar en la piscina en compañía de amigos y familiares, preparando una barbacoa y vistiendo traje de baño.

10. ¿A qué artista te gustaría conocer?

¿Tiene que estar vivo? Si no, diría Miguel Ángel. Si la respuesta es positiva, diría Cy Twombly –excelente pintor abstracto.

Miranda agrega:

Tengo muchos deseos de comenzar a trabajar en el NOMA, conocer la ciudad, a los artistas del área y, especialmente, a la comunidad hispana. Mi plan es convertir el arte latinoamericano contemporáneo en uno de mis focos –me emociona traer arte nuevo a la ciudad.
