Es tiempo de Carnaval en Nueva Orleans. ¿Lo sientes en el aire? Los desfiles comenzarán  pronto y todo el mundo saldrá para disfrutarlos con sus familiares y amigos. Yo estaré allí. Es parte de mi ser. El haber nacido en el centro de Nueva Orleans, Mardi Gras es parte de mí, como los son los po-boys, el café au lait y beignets. Puedo decir con orgullo que sólo me he perdido dos Mardi Gras en mi vida. Una vez cuando estaba en Jamaica y el año pasado, cuando tuvieron que sacarle el apéndice a mi hijo durante una cirugía de emergencia la noche de Lundi Gras (el dia antes de Mardi Gras). Las dos veces terminé viendolo en TV. Este año, tengo la intención de estar en esa celebración con mis hijos…eso es, si no hay visitas al hospital otra vez para sacar aún más partes del cuerpo!

¿En otros cosas, han estado viendo todos los debates de los candidatos? ¿Han estudiado quiénes serán los candidatos en las elecciones de este año? ¿Han leído los temas importantes a los cuales todos quieren soluciones? Sugiero que si usted es un ciudadano de este país, que se informe y vote en noviembre. El voto Latino puede marcar una diferencia y es tan importante. Deje que nuestras voces se escuchen para impactar los temas importantes que están cerca de casa como una solución a la reforma migratoria, por ejemplo. Lo que yo no puedo tolerar son todas las quejas de personas que pueden votar y cuando les pregunto si votaron la última vez, dicen que no. Su voto puede hacer la diferencia aunque no lo crea. Hay que ejercer ese privilegio.

En una última nota, Feliz Día de San Valentín a todos. Recuerdele a su ser querido que es muy especial o simplemente sorpréndalo con algo bonito ese día. En mi opinión, cada día debe ser el día de San Valentín, pero como un recordatorio para todos los chicos…ya saben cómo somos nosotras las chicas, entonces no olviden la tarjeta y el regalo el 14 de febrero! No se arrepentirán!

It’s Carnival time in New Orleans. Can you feel it in the air? Parades will be starting soon and everyone will go out to enjoy them with family and friends. I will be there. It’s part of my being. Having been born in downtown New Orleans, Mardi Gras is part of me like po-boys, café au lait and beignets. I can proudly say that I’ve only been away on Mardi Gras twice in my life. Once when I was in Jamaica and last year, when my son’s appendix had to come out in an emergency surgery on Lundi Gras night. Both times I had ended up watching it on TV. This year, I plan on being in that number with my boys…that is, if no hospital visits are in order to take out body parts again!

In other topics, have you been watching all the presidential debates? Have you studied who the candidates will be in this year’s election? Have you read the important issues that everyone want solutions to but can’t seem to get? I suggest that if you are a citizen of this country, you become informed and vote in November. The Latino vote can make a difference and it’s so important. Let our voices be heard to impact the important issues that hit close to home such as a resolution to immigration reform, for example. What I cannot tolerate is all the ranting and raving from people who can vote and when I ask if they voted, they say no. Your vote can make a difference whether you believe it or not. Exercise that privilege.

On a last note, Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone. Remind your loved one how special they are or just do something extra great on that day. In my opinion, every day should be Valentine’s Day but as a reminder to all the guys…you know how us girls can be, so don’t forget the card and the gift on February 14! You’ll be glad you did!
